Short/ Long Vowel Sounds: Gingerbread Man Poem and Activity

    This is a fun poem to read with students. The rhyming word at the end of each line contains a short or long vowel pattern. Students will analyze short and long vowel patterns from the poem.
  • Purpose:
    1. Read the poem aloud to students. Pause at the rhyming word and see if they can read/ guess what it is.
    2. Have students copy down rhyming words onto the Word Sort A page. One word in each box.
    3. Have students cut apart the words and glue them onto the Word Sort B page in the correct category.
    4. Check the answer key to make sure they are correct.

    Questions you might ask:
    -Why did you choose to put this word in this box? (Can be a correct or incorrect answer.)
    -What patterns did you notice in the poem or on your sorting page?
    -How were you able to predict the word I was going to say?
